Muniyappa seeks PM's help for flood-affected people in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka India News and Travel Times Provides India-centric and other News and Features

The Minister of State for Railways K.H.Muniyappa on Friday sought immediate intervention of the Prime Minister, Union Home Ministry and Union Defence Ministry in rescue and relief operations in border areas of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in the wake of the unprecedented flood situation. Torrential rains have continued to wreak havoc in Karnataka with 35 more deaths being reported from the region since Thursday night. In separate letters reportedly written to the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Union Home Minister P.Chidambaram and Union Defence Minister A.K.Antony, Muniyappa requested for immediate rescue operations at Mantralaya Matt, which is situated at Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka border where many devotees from both the states, as well as other states were held up. Muniyappa also mentioned in the letters that the floodwater was flowing 20 feet above the ground level and, as a result, many people have already lost their lives. He drew attention to the condition of some people stranded at the roofs of their houses and lying in great danger to their lives. The minister also requested them to coordinate with the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Karnatka in this regard. Earlier in the day, Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa visited rain-affected Haveri district. He also held an emergency with State Law Minister S Suresh Kumar, Rural Development Minister Shobha Karandlaje and Transport Minister R Ashok, Chief Secretary S V Ranganath, Director General of Police (DGP) Ajay Kumar Singh and Additional DGP (Law and Order) A R Infant and officers of Air Force and Army to take stock of the situation.
