Scientific expedition completed to mark 30 years of Indian presence in Antarctica

A scientific expedition to South Pole was launched from the Indian Station ‘Maitri’ at Antarctica to mark 30 years of Indian presence in the Earth’s southernmost continent. An eight-member team started the 2,350 km journey on November 13 and completed it on November 22, Union Earth Sciences Minister Kapil Sibal replied to a question by Kishnbhai V. Patel and Pradip Majhi in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. “Observations about the glacial/geomophological land forms along the traverse, meteorology, subsurface structure, snow chemistry, aerosols, etc. were made besides collection of ice cores regularly along the traverse,” Sibal said. The analysis of the observations and core samples is to be carried out. The expedition is on its way back to Indian Station ‘Maitri’.
