Patil says India supports Syria in seeking lasting solution to Middle East problem

     President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on Saturday assured Syria of India’s full support in strengthening bilateral economic cooperation and to help the former in finding a lasting solution to the Middle East problem. Patil was speaking after being accorded a ceremonial reception at the People’s Palace here that included a 21-gun salute. Patil is on a four-day visit of Syria . Syrian President Bashar al-Assad received President Patil at the palace. The ceremonial reception was followed by delegation-level talks and a joint address to the media of both countries. A cultural exchange programme and two agreements on cooperation between media organizations are being signed between the two countries later today to facilitate a greater flow of information and to bring the people of both nations closer. A business delegation is also accompanying Patil to explore opportunities for investments in Syria . Assuring Syria of India’s support on the issue of the Golan Heights with Israel , she said: “ India has consistently supported all just Arab causes. I would like to reiterate India ’s unwavering support for a lasting and comprehensive peace to the Middle East problem, based on relevant UN resolutions.” “I would also like to reiterate our strong support for Syria ’s legitimate right to the Goaln Heights , and for its very early and full return to Syria ,” she told reporters during a joint address with President Assad. The Syrian President thanked India for the position taken on supporting Arab rights, particularly for the causes of Palestine and the Golan Heights . “We expressed our hope that Syrian-Indian relations together with international efforts will help put an end to the sufferings of the Palestinian people, blockaded by an apartheid wall,” said President Assad. Condemning terrorism in all forms, President Assad said: “We have reiterated our two countries condemnation of terrorism in all its forms. And, on the second anniversary of the terrorist Mumbai bombings, marked yesterday, we renew our support of India in fighting terrorism and in order to arrive at a safe and stable world.” President Patil is in Syria from November 26-29 after completing her visit to the UAE from November 21-25. She will also meet Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Naji Otri and the Speaker of the Syrian Parliament, Mahmoud Al Abrash. The President will address Indian and Syrian businessmen and launch the Syria-India Business Council. President Patil will also visit the International Centre for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA) in Aleppo , where many Indian scientists are doing commendable work.
