Malay Indians accuse Selangor Govt. of discrimination in giving study loans | The Malay Indian community in the state of Selangor has accused the local administration of handing out study loans in a discriminatory manner. It described the allocation of government
education grants to only four Maly Indian students as controversial. The Star
quoted Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) Youth secretary C. Sivarrajah, as saying
that he was disappointed with the state government offering so few study loans
to Indians, pointing out that 36 recipients from the community were offered the
loans in 2006. The state government, he said, was duty-bound to explain the low
number of study loans offered to Indians. "We cannot accept Selangor state executive
councillor Teresa Kok's explanation that there was a lack of applications from
non-Malays. It is irresponsible and she is clearly washing her hands off this
sensitive issue," he said in a statement yesterday. He also berated Indian leaders
in Pakatan Rakyat for keeping silent on the issue.
