Raja should be arrested, say Jayalalithaa | All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief
Jayalalithaa has demanded the arrest of A Raja, who resigned as Union Telecom Minister on Sunday over his role in the 2G spectrum scam. Jayalalithaa asked for
Raja's arrest in a press statement issued here today. "This overdue resignation
is not a case of scaling the moral high ground. Raja had been mocking at all Constitutional
institutions including the office of the Prime Minister," Jayalalithaa said in
the statement. "Raja himself should be charged under the Prevention of Corruption
Act and should be arrested and tried for perpetrating the biggest scam in the
history of mankind," she added. Earlier, talking to reporters here, Raja said
that in order to avoid embarrassment to the Government and maintain peace and
harmony in Parliament, he has resigned from his post. He, however, said he would
prove his innocence and would do everything in accordance with the law. The 2G
spectrum allocation has reportedly caused an alleged loss of Rs1.76 lakh crore
to the Government, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has stated
in a damning report. The report further states that Raja had no apparent logical
or valid reasons to ignore the advice of the Law and Finance Ministries while
allocating telecom spectrum to several firms in 2007-08. The report is likely
to be tabled in Parliament within ten days.
