Pak Cabinet slams Obama's support for India's UN Security Council permanent seat | Pakistan has passed a resolution against United States President Barack Obama's support of India's bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), saying that it would disturb the balance of power in the region. The resolution was passed in a cabinet meeting
chaired by Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in Islamabad . "This decision
has grave ramifications for the direction and prospects of the system of multilateral
cooperation as envisaged by the founding fathers of UN Charter," the Daily Times
the resolution, as saying. "This is most explicitly illustrated by India 's disregard
of Security Council resolutions on Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and gross and systematic
violations of the fundamental human rights of the Kashmiri people," it added.
The resolution further stated that Pakistan , along with a large number of members
of the international community, supported a principled process of reform of the
Security Council. "The future of the UN and of succeeding generations cannot and
must not be premised on considerations of power politics, politics of expediency,
bereft of morals and ideals, which must be the guiding spirit for an enlightened
international order," the resolution said. "This process should be based on respect
for the cardinal principles of the UN Charter, including the principle of sovereign
equality of states," it added. Earlier, Obama had backed India for a permanent
seat on the UNSC while addressing a joint session of Parliament in New Delhi .
"The just and sustainable international order that America seeks includes a United
Nations that is effective, efficient, credible and legitimate. That is why I can
say today: In the years ahead I look forward to a reformed U.N. Security Council
that includes India as a permanent member," Obama had said.
