Obama accorded ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan

     A ceremonial reception was accorded to US President Barack Obama at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here this morning. Obama and First Lady Michelle were welcomed warmly at the presidential palace forecourt by President Pratibha Patil and her husband Devisingh Patil. They were then greeted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Gursharan Kaur. The First Couple then proceeded to Mahatma Gandhi's Samadhi at Rajghat, where they will pay tribute to the father of the nation. He will also hold formal talks with Prime Minister Singh and address a joint press conference. In the evening, he will address a joint sitting of parliament before heading for a state banquet at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Obama will be using a teleprompter for his address to Parliament, the first time the device will be in use in the Central Hall. Teleprompters are textbook-sized panes of glass holding the prepared remarks of the speaker which rests on top of a tall, narrow pole in front of the podium during speeches. Obama will also sign the Golden Book, the visitors' diary of Parliament.
