Fennell apologises for injury to Ugandan officials | Commonwealth Games Federation President Michael Fennell on
Thursday apologised for a bizarre car accident resulting in injuries to three Ugandan officials, including
the team's Chef de Mission, at the Games Village. "We regret that very much. It's
being investigated. This has caused some damage to the officials. Security has
been raised," said Fennell at the customary morning media conference at the Main
Press Centre. Fennell further said the Commonwealth Games Federation were not
directly involved with the incident. "The federation is not directly involved
with that. It was done by a contractor. I asked about the welfare of the workers
who were injured. I have been assured that they were taken care of. I am not aware
of anybody being critically ill," he added. Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games
Organising
Committee Secretary General Lalit Bhanot giving details of the accident said there
were four persons inside the car (including the driver). "They were taken to the
Village polyclinic and an MRI was done before they were shifted to a hospital
(G B Pant Eye hospital) outside the Village," he added. It has been reported that
the three injured Uganda officials have been discharged from the hospital. A spiked
metal barrier guarding any breaches of the first check point at the athletes'
village VIP entrance was activated suddenly in error, throwing the car into a
sideways spin just yesterday.
