Asian, European leaders discuss security, terrorism, piracy on final day of 8th ASEM | Leaders participating in the two-day 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit discussed issues of security, terrorism, piracy and disaster management, on the second and final day of the summit here on Tuesday. Talking to reporters
after the conclusion of ASEM summit, Ministry of External Affairs' Secretary (East)
Vijay Latha Reddy, informed that today the world leaders talked about security,
terrorism, piracy and disaster management. Reddy said that "the leaders from Asia
and Europe turned their attention from economic issues to security on Tuesday",
as they opened the second and final day of a summit in Brussels. She, however,
also mentioned about a participant country (without naming it) which described
" poverty" as "a worst case of violence" while quoting Mahatma Gandhi. ASEM
summit
was participated by 48 nations this time. On Monday, during his address at the
summit, Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari told the participating nations that
the global economic recovery and growth of developing nations would not be
possible
if non-traditional methods of protection remain a part of stimulus packages and
emergency support measures initiated by the developed world. ASEM states
account
for more than half the world's population and wealth and include powerful nations
such as China, India, France and Germany.
