Scot Commonwealth Games chief predicts inevitable serious mishap during Delhi | A leading Scottish official has warned that a serious mishap is all but inevitable during the coming 11 days
of competition in the XIXth Commonwealth Games that are being held here. Michael Cavanagh, Chairman of Commonwealth Games Scotland, also accused the Delhi
organising
committee of letting down the people of India, and said the country's dream of
hosting the Olympic Games in 2020 has been dashed by the shambolic management
of this event. "If they get through 11 days of competition without a major hitch
it will be almost miraculous. Something is going to happen somewhere along the
line, whether it be a technical problem or whatever, Cavanagh said. He added:
"That's going to be really unfortunate, and it's the thing all of us have been
trying to stress to the organising committee for two years, that you really can't
afford to leave it this late, because it's too important. But they have." Cavanagh
is member of the board in charge of the Glasgow 2014 games and a former
international
wrestler. He believes that the Delhi organizing committee (OC) failed to learn
from previous events, such as Melbourne 2006. "Once the competition starts, it's
going to be interesting to see how they cope. There seems to be a culture here
of leaving it very late and they do get by," The Scotsman quoted him, as saying.
He added: "The Indians are the most friendly, hospitable people you could meet.
They've been let down by the OC.
