CWG athletes advised to stay within security bubble of Games venues

Though chaotic last-minute construction and cleaning has been brought under control at venues slotted for the XIXth Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi from October 3 to 14, security remains a crucial issue. The Delhi Police has reportedly advised all athletes to stay inside a security bubble at the athlete compound, training sites and competition venues. There would be some 20,000 personnel to keep 7,000 athletes safe. "I assure the athletes that there is foolproof security for the Commonwealth Games. There is no doubt about that," the Globe and Mail quoted Delhi 's Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal, as saying at a news conference on Thursday. Scott Stevenson, Commonwealth Games Canada's director of sport, said: "The chief minister of Delhi , Sheila Dikshit, has taken the village under her control, brought significant influence and we've felt significant confidence in what she's doing." Stevenson said he inspected one suite that has been prepared "and I am very pleased to say that it's adequate in terms of cleanliness and fixes. At the end of the day, we're in a better position to turn our attention to sport." Canadians will start arriving as early as Sunday evening, he said. These Games are a highly symbolic target. The Telegraph's website says there have been 14 major terrorist attacks in New Delhi in the past year. CGC president Dr. Andrew Pipe said: "We'll be in a safe, secure environment."
