Spot-fixing: 39th and 40th overs of third Pak-England ODI under scrutiny

The International Cricket Council’s investigations over spot-fixing allegations during the third one-day international between England and Pakistan at the Oval are believed to be focussing on two consecutive overs in the later part of the innings. The investigation by the ICC is likely to be centred around the events between the 38th and 40th overs of Pakistan 's innings, as surprisingly very few runs were scored in this particular span, The News reports. Though Pakistan had lost both openers before getting even tens runs on the board and had to bat carefully, they were gaining some momentum after 38 overs, at a score of 179 for five. But in the 39th and 40th overs of their innings, the visiting team scored no more than seven runs – notably having scored 58 off their previous eight overs, on what was widely acknowledged to be a pitch made for batting. Shocked by the allegations of the third ODI match being fixed, Afridi has called for exemplary punishment if anyone is found guilty, but insists that there should be solid proof to support the claim, and that the evidence should be made public.
