White wants Cricket Australia to consider him as T20 captain

Cameron White expects the Cricket Australia to endorse Michael Clarke as Twenty20 captain next month, but the Victorian captain is pleased to be regarded as a credible alternative. Replacing Ricky Ponting as Twenty20 captain had not occurred to White until his Victorian coach, Greg Shipperd, put his name forward. As the man most likely to inherit the Test and one-day captaincy when Ponting eventually retires, Clarke is also favoured to lead Australia to the next World Twenty20 event in the West Indies in April, The Age reports. White believes his credentials are good after arguments to preserve Clarke, one of country's most valuable and busiest cricketers. "I guess so. I've captained for a fair while now and had some good success for Victoria, especially in that format. I think I understand the game pretty well. If that happened that would be great, but Michael will definitely take over," he said. White made a splash as a batsman with a century at No. 3 while Ponting was rested during the recent one-day international series in England. He has the world's third-highest Twenty20 score and has led Victoria to three domestic titles. Recently, Shipperd said: "It can be difficult for a captain moving from one format to another to get his head around all the nuances of the various games, and the hectic schedule of all forms of the game also has an impact with possible burn-out. Cameron has been captain of the Australia A team, he is captain of Victoria and he is an outstanding potential captain of Twenty20." The need to limit the strain on Clarke was highlighted this week when the vice-captain succumbed to a recurring back problem, and missed Champions Trophy game against the West Indies.
