Rizwanur Rahman case: Supreme Court gives reprieve to businessman Todi | The Supreme Court of India, on Friday, stayed two Kolkata
High Court orders to initiate fresh investigations into the death of Kolkata-based design professional Rizwanur Rahman. The stayed orders include one where a trial
court discharged businessman Ashok Todi, one of the prime accused, and second
order that was stayed was one where the Kolkata High Court directed the Central
Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to reinvestigate the case and ascertain the cause
of Rahman's death. The CBI, in its turn, had dismissed Rahman's death as suicide
and also went a step further to chargesheet seven others, accusing them of 'abetment
to suicide'. A division bench of the Kolkata High Court had recently quashed the
findings and directed the CBI to lodge a case of murder against the seven accused.
The fresh case of murder would make the earlier investigations null and void.
Rizwanur Rahman was found dead near railway tracks in North Kolkata's Dumdum area
on September 21, 2007. His suspicious death occurred after he married Ashok Todi's
daughter Priyanka against the latter's wishes.
