World Heart Day marked in the country |
World Heart Day was observed
on Sunday in the country to spread awareness among people about taking proper
care of their hearts and thus avoiding various cardiovascular diseases which are
today viewed as major killers world over. In Mangalore, KMC Hospital has organized
a series of events as part of the World Heart Day 2009 to create public awareness
about the heart and its importance in human lives. The KMC Hospital and K S Hegde
Hospital in association with DK Chapter of Indian Medical Association organized
World Heart Day Run and Marathon Walk to mark the World Heart Day. The programme
as stated included the World Heart Day run (on Sunday), a month long heart screening
camp, display of hoardings and banners in and around the city with messages about
the event and a drawing competition for children. Hundreds of people participated
in the World Heart Day Run, organised by the KMC hospital for the fifth consecutive
year. It began the run from KMC, Bejai at 7.30 a.m. The World Health Organisation
(WHO) has declared September 27 as World Heart Day to create awareness about heart
and the reasons leading to heart related diseases. According to World Health Organisation
(WHO), heart diseases and stroke are the first and second leading causes of deaths
among adult men and women in the developed countries. The latest reports indicate
that 60 per cent of the heart disease patients in the world would be Indians by
2010. The studies suggest that silently advancing cardiovascular disease (CVD)
would kill more Indians annually in the next six years than any other disease. |
