Saudi comedy showing female marrying four men provokes anger | A comedy programme on Saudi television showing a role reversal in which a woman marries four husbands has dented male pride in the country. The satirical Saudi show, Tash Ma Tash or No Big Deal, a
take-off of social prejudices is shown annually during the holy month of Ramazan,
The Telegraph reports. The central character marries four times, explaining herself
using the conventional arguments that Saudi men use to exercise their legal and
religious privilege of marrying four times. Conservative imams have been predictably
hostile, while men on Internet have attacked the series as promoting prostitution.
“What this does is hurt us. In the name of comedy, they make fun of our religion
and beliefs,” said imam Sheikh Saad Al-Buraik. There are regular calls to ban
Tash Ma Tash, but it is said to be one of King Abdullah’s favourite programmes. |
