Five more protestors die during clashes with police in Kashmir | At least five more protestors died during clashes with
police on Monday, as the security personnel opened fire to quell violent mobs after they resorted to stone pelting, targeting government buildings and looting of weapons from police. Despite curfew, hundreds of protestors took to streets
at several places in south Kashmir . One protester was killed in police firing
after agitators attacked a police post and attempted to set it afire in Kulgam
district. In adjacent Sangam in Anantnag district, one person was killed when
CRFP personnel retaliated to heavy stone throwing at their camp, police said,
adding another person died in a stampede following the firing. At Kakpora, in
Kashmir 's Pulwama district, police opened fire on a group of stone-pelting protesters
who were indulging in ransacking, killing one of them. One person was killed in
Kralpora in north Kashmir 's Kupwara district when police fired on a mob which
looted arms from a police post. However, the protestors managed to flee with four
rifles. Earlier in the day, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited
New Delhi and called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh along with senior members
of his Cabinet to discuss the prevailing situation in the Kashmir valley. After
the meeting Abdullah stated that the consensus between the Central and State governments
is that restoration of normalcy in Kashmir valley is a pre-requisite for any kind
political initiative in the State. |
