Raj invites political leaders’ ire for blaming north Indian migrants for malaria outbreak | Maharashtra Navniraman Sena leader Raj Thackeray has invited criticism of various leaders belonging to other parties for blaming the migrants from north India for
causing malaria outbreak in Mumbai. On Sunday, Raj Thackeray is reported to have
held migrants from north Indian states for the outbreak of malaria in and around
Mumbai city. "This kind of derogatory statement should not be uttered by anybody.
I am against this. This is one country, one soil…everyone has the fundamental
right to go and stay anywhere they want. Everybody should move together," said
Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. Janata Dal (U) chief and National Democratic
Alliance leader Sharad Yadav said that Raj Thackeray’s comments were an insult
of all north Indians living in Mumbai and suggested he is just a local leader.
"There are people who are dying of malaria throughout India …who is responsible
for that…Raj Thackeray ? You people ask us about these questions… who has made
these leaders (like Thackeray). I feel so sad that you ask us about such questions,
who is not out of the municipality. People like these have come and gone before.
They just have lost the elections," said Sharad Yadav. Congress MP Rajeev Shukla
said the media must not highlight the ideals of Raj Thackeray and his MNS since
giving coverage prompts him to take up another gimmick to gain publicity. "My
personal view about this is that you people (media) should not take Raj Thackeray
seriously. Whenever, they (radical regional parties like Maharashtra Navanirmana
Sena) are out of power, they start abusing the north Indians. In Mumbai there
is no conflict between north Indians and Maharashtrians… all live in harmony,
they complement and supplement each other. To highlight their political power
they (radical parties) play these kinds of gimmicks. The day when you people (media)
stop giving them importance they will shut their shop. If you people continue
to give them the importance and also coverage, their shops will remain open,"
said Shukla. Heavy downpour had inundated a good number of localities in Mumbai
and also resulted in flooding of rivers in several other places elsewhere in Maharashtra
. While a good monsoon is vital to India ''s farm sector, heavy rains and runoff
also lead to floods and outbreak of diseases. |
