Gill inaugurates remodelled Nehru stadium in Delhi | Union Sports Minister Dr. M.S. Gill on Tuesday inaugurated remodelled and reconstructed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the national capital. Speaking on this occasion, Dr.
Gill said that it is for the first time in India that such complex stadium with
unique design has been constructed. He complemented engineers and workers for
the hard work put in by them in meeting the high standards of engineering. He
further stated that the stadia to be constructed by the Sports Authority of India
and Ministry of Sports have been completed, except the Weightlifting Stadium,
which will be formally inaugurated within 2-3 days. The Sports Authority of India
has constructed nine stadia, namely, M.D.C. National Stadium, Dr. Karni Singh
Shooting Ranges, Lawn Bowl Stadium, I.G. Complex for Gymnastics, Cycling and Wrestling,
J.N.L. main stadium for athletics and JN Sports Complex for Weightlifting. Whereas
Ministry of Sports directly funded and supervised the construction of Big Bore
Shooting Range, Kadarpur, R.K. Khanna Tennis Stadium, Rugby Stadium in Delhi University
and Training Venues for Rugby and Table Tennis in Jamia Millia Islamia. He also
said that these stadia built by SAI and Sports Ministry would be handed over to
the Organising Committee of Commonwealth Games, 2010 on 1st August for fitting
overlays and security equipments and getting them ready for the Games. The function
was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit, Chairman, Organising Committee
for CWG , 2010 Suresh Kalmadi, several sports persons and senior officials of
the sports Ministry. J.N. Stadium will host Opening and Closing ceremonies of
the Commonwealth Games, 2010 and athletics events. The stadium was constructed
during ASIAD’1982. |
