Pak will have to live with much closer monitoring of US aid: Editorial

Pakistan has been continuously pressing the United States to give the funds directly to the government in order to reduce administration charges, however, the Obama Administration has made it clear that it would channelise the assistance through various non-government institutions to prevent its misuse. With the US having taken a firm stand that it would no longer give Pakistan any 'blank cheque' and maintain a high level of accountability, Islamabad would have to accept the fact that it would now have to live with much more intense monitoring than the past. According to an editorial in The News, the aid being offered to Pakistan by the US and other countries would also bring in many issues with it. "It will have to live with a much closer monitoring of the use of aid than it has been accustomed to in the past," the editorial said. It also highlighted that there was a clear shift in the view that the aid should not only be utilized for military purpose, rather the focus should be on providing basic amenities such as education, employment and health services. "For the people of Pakistan , the change in emphasis from military aid alone to a more mixed package is probably good news. It reflects too a recognition that to a very large extent militancy is bred by the devastating lack of social equity," the editorial added. Referring to the massive expansion plans of the US embassy in Islamabad and reports regarding Washington 's plans to send more officials and Marines to Pakistan , it said that while the country needs support at present, it should also assess its relationship with the US . " Pakistan needs to carefully assess its relationship with the US and find a way to set it out on a more equal footing, so that Washington acts as a friend rather than as a master," it concluded.
