'Dr Death' Jayant Patel's lawyers lodge appeal in manslaughter case | Lawyers of jailed Indian-origin surgeon, Dr. Jayant Patel, have lodged an appeal against his sentence and conviction for manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm on patients at an Australian hospital. The lawyers lodged papers in the Queensland Court of Appeal, The Australian
reports. Patel, a.k.a. Dr Death, was sentenced on July 1 to seven years' jail
for the manslaughter of three patients and causing grievous bodily harm to a fourth.
The 60-year-old had pleaded not guilty in the Supreme Court in Brisbane to the
manslaughter of Mervyn Morris, Gerardus Kemps and James Phillips. He had also
pleaded not guilty to the grievous bodily harm of Ian Vowles. The charges related
to Patel's time as director of surgery at the Bundaberg Base Hospital between
2003 and 2005. The trial involved the evidence of 76 witnesses over 53 days. |
