Sikh diaspora meets US Vice President Biden | A high level delegation of American Sikh leaders has
appealed to US Vice President Joe Biden to take up Sikh related issues with other countries. Since the 9/11 terror attack, Sikhs have been explaining to the world
that they are not followers of the Taliban, and should not be targeted for mistaken
identity. Sikhs, in recent times, have become victim of hate crime, and American
Sikh leaders have discussed this with Biden, apart from other issues related to
the community. They also raised the issue of Sikhs in France facing problems like
wearing turbans and other religious symbols. The Sikh leaders, most of them from
California, conveyed their anxiety about the community's international probelems
to Biden and requested him to take up the matter with the related countries. Biden
was in the Silicon Valley to raise money for Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer's
re-election. The Sikhs have a sizeable presence in California. Revealing details
of the meeting, Dr. Pritpal Singh, convener of the American Gurudwara Parbhandhak
Committee (AGPC), told ANI over phone that Biden patiently listen their issues
and assured them of taking up Sikh related issues on priority. Dr. Kulwant Singh,
an active member of the Democratic Party, Harpreet Singh Sandhu, a former councillor
of Richmond and Balbir Singh Dillon, a senior leader from San Jose, were the part
of the Sikh delegation. |
