Time has come to address honour killings issue, says Congress party | Following recent incidents of honour killings in New Delhi and neighbouring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, Congress party on Wednesday said that the time has come to take a national view on the matter and put it down with a firm hand. "There are various
levels at which this violence and murder need to be addressed and studied and
we believe that the time has come to take a national view in this matter," said
Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan during a press conference in the capital.
Natarajan added that a stern action should be taken against whosoever is responsible
for these murders in the name of social honour. She also noted that no sane society
could ever tolerate such inhuman deeds. "We believe that a holistic view should
be taken. In any event, this violence and murder cannot be condoned by any civilised
society and must be put down with a firm hand," said Natarajan. On June 22, a
girl was found killed in a car in New Delhi, two days after bodies of an inter-caste
couple, Kuldeep and Monica, were found in a suspected case of honour killing.
The NGOs have recently filed a petition complaining that though there was a spurt
in honour killings in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Haryana, neither
the federal nor the state governments were taking steps to curb the menace. |
